Travelers overseas can get free translation help

September 19, 2006 ㅡ Starting next month, Koreans traveling overseas can get free translation help from the Before Babel Brigade (BBB), a network of volunteer interpreters that assists foreigners in Korea, the agency announced. Interpretation will be available through international calls to the BBB head office in Korea (82-1588-5644). Users will be charged only for the call. According to the BBB network, its 2,700 members will provide interpretation service in 17 languages around the clock, starting on Oct. 1. The outbound project is one of the JoongAng Ilbo''s programs to mark the newspaper''s 41st anniversary. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Samsung Electronics and Woori Bank are also sponsoring the project.Prior to departure, travelers will be able to pick up a BBB outbound instruction card at international airports and ports. The 17 languages available for interpretation are English, Japanese, Chinese, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, German, Portuguese, Arabic, Polish, Turkish, Swedish, Thai, Vietnamese, Malay and Indonesian. Kim Do-yong, a 40-year-old manager at SKT, welcomed the launch of the outbound service. He said he benefited from a pilot program of the BBB service during a trip to China last month. "The real time interpretation service was very useful," said Mr. Kim. He said he used his cell phone to make an international call to the BBB center while he was trying to bargain with a Chinese photographer on Mount Paektu. "It is very reassuring to learn that the Before Babel Brigade is launching an outbound service that will help Koreans traveling overseas when emergencies occur," he said. At the same time as the outbound BBB service gets launched, the Joong-Ang Ilbo will begin a new program to provide rental BBB cell phones that can be used abroad.Starting next month, 3,500 roaming rental phones will be made available. JoongAng Ilbo subscribers will be able to borrow the phones for free, if reservations are made in advance. The BBB was launched by the JoongAng Ilbo in 2002 for the World Cup that year.

May 21, 2007 Thousands of Koreans and foreigners on Saturday gathered at Seoul’s Cheonggye Plaza to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Korea BBB Association, a network of volunteer interpreters that assists foreigners in Korea and Koreans outside the country. “Beyond the language barrier, we are all friends,” read a sign on the orange balloons, held by about 5,000 participants, 1,000 of whom were foreigners, organizers said. They walked the 5.8-kilometer (3.6-mile) round-trip along the stream from the waterfall near Cheonggye Plaza to Ogansu Bridge in Jongno 6-ga and back. The BBB, or Before Babel Brigade, has been providing free interpretation services via cell phones to about 100,000 foreigners in the country and Koreans visiting other countries. More than 3,200 volunteers offer the service in 17 languages, according to the association. Diplomats from 17 countries, including Russia, Hungary, Australia, Peru and Laos and their families, joined the walk. “It is very impressive that one can get help whenever or wherever he or she wants through a cell phone,” said Raba Hadid, Algerian ambassador to Korea. Janet, 52-year-old office worker from the United States who wanted to be named only by her first name, said she met Han Hyun-woo, 52, a Korean businessman, and his wife, when registering for the event. The three walked together.“Our conversation started from weather and moved on to religion and philosophy,” she said. “I met good friends today that I have wanted for the past three years of my stay in Korea.” After returning from the walk, traditional performances by Turkish, Japanese, Vietnamese and Thai performers were held.
